I was doin great on my Lexapro 10 mg. per day. I was also taking
Adderall XR 30 mg. once in the a. m. So great that I stopped
taking it. Two weeks later I attempted suicide, somehow survived,
and am doing great on my medication again.. Bottom line… If its
not ur time to go… u wont go anywhere. Im grateful every time the
sun rises now and I say ” I know Ive been down but im gonna take
This Day and enjoy it to its fullest no matter what life may bring
me” God Bless us everyone!

drug/alcohol use and lexapro

Tuesday, August 31st, 2004

Hello all, new to the group too. I’m on week 3 of Lexapro,
prescribed for anxiety attacks. (I’m also diagnosed with borderline
personality disorder.) After some initial adjustment stage, things
seem to be going well… less moods swings and feelings of anxiety.
Here’s my question:
Is it okay to use drugs/alcohol while on Lexapro? Now I know
the ‘best practice’ is to avoid these thing completely… but
practically speaking, this is pretty hard to do. I don’t ‘abuse’…
maybe go out to a bar 2x a week, use “e” every other month or so.
I’ve always been a responsible user. I want to make sure that there
won’t be any major chemical conflict/reactions with the Lexapro….
don’t want to end up in an emergency room any time soon.
I know the ‘right’ answer is to stop completely… but
realistically….what’s the outlook?
Thanks

Lexapro Withdrawal - 12yr old

Monday, August 30th, 2004

Greetings all…
I just joined this group in the hopes of getting some feedback on
Lexapro withdrawal.
First, a little history. I’m divorced with two kids…an 11 year old
girl and a 12 year old boy. The ex-wife…who is a bit of a
hypochondriac…observed anxiety attacks occurring with our son.
According to her he would just start crying for no known reason. I
see both my kids on a regular basis and had never observed this
behavior myself. She brought him to a psychiatrist in October of 2002
and he prescribed a daily 5mg dose of Lexapro. She did this without
my knowledge or input, which is a big no-no according to our divorce
agreement, but that’s a different story. I bring it up because I have
serious doubts as to whether he needed to be medicated at all.
In addition to taking the meds, our son was also seeing a
psychologist as part of his treatment. (The psychiatrist didn’t do
counseling…he just prescribed the drugs. Don’t know if that is
normal or not.)
While on the Lexapro, there were no more anxiety attacks. He
experienced no side effects except for an occasional migraine, but he
had been dealing with those prior to the Lexapro. The
psychologist…who has the same doubts I have as to whether he ever
should have been on meds…felt we should take him off the Lexapro
over the summer.
The decision was finally made to take him off the Lexapro. He had
been taking a 5mg dose every morning. The dosage was reduced to 2.5mg
for a week and he went completely off the medicine the following
week.
After being off the medicine for 10 days, school started. He is now
in the 7th grade and attending the same school he did last year.
Now the anxiety attacks are worse than they ever were before taking
the Lexapro. He freaked out looking up a word in the dictionary. He
couldn’t stop crying one night and refused to do his homework. One
morning he was crying and upset so bad that he didn’t go to school at
all. Those were the worse of the problems, but there have been other
teary moments as well.
I brought him to his psychologist to help us figure out what was
going on. The Dr. is about 70-75% sure he is having withdrawal
symptoms. The problem is that the medicine is so new that there isn’t
a whole lot of data on what happens when people come off of it. The
info I have found describes symptoms he is not experiencing and has
involved adults, not kids.
The Dr. wants us to wait it out for a week or so to see if his
problems diminish. At this point we are day-to-day. It’s been a few
days and fortunately he has not missed any more school thus far.
The only other meds my son currently takes regular are for allergies
Flonase and Zertec, I think.
Has anybody in the forum had experience with Lexapro withdrawals in a
child? Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thank you
Jay

New member - Questions about Lexapro

Monday, August 30th, 2004

I just joined this group a couple of days ago. I have been depressed for a
number of years and have been on medication for about three years — Prozac,
Wellbutrin, Effexor. About three months ago, my doctor took me off Effexor
after I raised some questions about that particular med raising blood pressure
and cholestrol (I take meds to lower both) and because I was suffering side
effects from the Effexor.
I had withdrawal symptoms from Effexor but made it through them and was relieved
to see that my blood pressure dropped down to a more normal level for me. I
felt pretty good for a couple of weeks after completely stopping the med. Then
I was hit with a couple of things that I couldn’t handle. My sister (who has
had two open heart surgeries within 4 months of each other) was hospitalized
again and I lost my job of 8 years. The depression returned. This time my
doctor gave me Lexapro. She says it’s fast acting and has less side effects
than some of the other meds and felt it might help me.
I am on day 2 of the medication and am having nasuea (on and off during the day
but worse in the am). I take my pill before bedtime. I am also completely
drained of energy. How long do these side effects last? I am not going to quit
the med cause I believe I do need the help but was wondering how long till I
feel better?

Therapy??

Friday, August 27th, 2004

I was just sitting here not able to sleep and was wondering how many
of you are in therapy. My doc didn’t even talk to me about it.

I’ll ask again, why so many on this site taking benzo’s and a/d’s?

I’m personally taking klonopin and the lex, but why are others taking
it…isn’t the antidepressant enough?

constipation?

I’ve been taking lexapro about a week and I haven’t gone to the
bathroom for days. Has anyone else experienced this on lexapro? Is it
safe to take something for it? I’ve used colace in the past but I’m
very cautious about taking even an OTC medication since starting the
lex and klonopin. My MD is on vacation. I guess I could check with my
pharmacist..
