lex + cold medicines?

Saturday, October 23rd, 2004

I’ve been fighting a cold for a few days now and have been afraid
to take anything for it. I remember my doctor telling me that
dextramorphine (which is in dayquil/nyquil/etc.) doesn’t get
absorbed as well if you are on lex and can cause a problem if you
take it for a while. He was kind of fuzzy on how long was ok. Should
I worry? Anyone have any experience? I’m guessing if I took it for a
few days it wouldn’t be a problem..

In a message dated 10/15/03 6:00:35 AM, Crystal The brain has several serotonin receptors that control various things… one
of them is weight. The SSRIs are notorious for hitting those receptors as well
as others for mood, sleep, sex drive, etc. For some people, SSRIs can mean
weight loss; others, weight gain. Lexapro is among the more weight-neutral, but
we’re finding that in fact it does affect weight.
Next, GWM in Hollywood < (SSRIs and tricyclics included) except for MAOIs.
Every one has worked a little or a lot, but I stop
eventually due to side effects. Paxil works the best
for me and I have taken it the longest (probably 8
years give or take). But the constipation and sex side
effects made me stop.Lexapro is basically my “last resort”.
Give Lexapro a try, because it really is an effective drug and has helped
many people, but as is the case with psychiatric drugs, every drug works
differently on everybody — this list is witness to that. If after a month or
six
weeks, you find that you’re not getting the same results as you did on Paxil,
then
by all means, go back to the Paxil. Speaking of Paxil, it is the WORST for
sexual side-effects, and as a male, trust me, I know how awful that is! But it’s
infinitely better than even toying with suicidal thoughts. You could also try
adding a 5-HTP supplement to your Lexapro… 5-HTP is the precursor to
serotonin. Generally, adding serotonin while you take an SSRI isn’t a good idea,
but
in your case a little bit might be helpful. Please check with your
psychiatrist.

Lexapro verses Celexa Part 2

Thursday, October 21st, 2004

For all of you former Celexa users, what was it about Celexa that
you didn’t like?
Did any of you have side effects like constipation, dry mouth,
sensitivity to light, insomnia, sedation or agitation?
How is Lexapro better for you?

You guys are freaking me out with the weight gain issue!

Monday, October 18th, 2004

Hi all,
Besides Paxil not working anymore on my depression, the main reason I am
switching off it to Lexapro is because Lex is supposed to be weight neutral. I
really had high hopes of loosing this Paxil weight and that Lex would not do the
same. I need positive stories about weight on Lex if anyone has one. Thanks
Stephanie

Celexa verses Lexapro

Anyone find celexa better or worse than Lexapro? Just given Lexapro
and it causes constipation and irritates my stomach. Also seems to
flare up my allergies. Any suggestions, thanks.

constipation?

Dosage/Anger and Lexapro

< weeks, because of all my dark thoughts. I am onm 20 now but will progress to
30 soon.
Jacquie, please be careful of this. The other day I mentioned that the newest
research coming out (including that from Lexapro’s manufacturer, Forest Labs)
shows that dosages above 10 don’t have any therapeutic effect, just increased
side effects. Remember also that 10mg Lexapro is roughly the same as 40 of
Celexa… so you’re at 80mg Celexa now, about to jump to 120mg (!)…
Also, remember that Lexapro is an “entianomer” of Celexa… basically, Forest
took Celexa, cut the molecule in half, and took the part that works, and
disposed of the rest (in thinking it would reduce side effects). While it have
greatly reduced side effects, and is much more powerful and effective in smalled
dosages, what that process also means is that is is very narrow in the
specific brain receptors it reaches. Compared to other SSRIs, Lexapro has a
beautiful
side effect profile because it only hits a few receptors. This also means it
works wonderfully for some people, and has no effect on others.
If you are having “dark thoughts” still, I urge you to talk to your
psychiatrist and try to find another solution — Lexapro might not be the best
for you.
Another SSRI or even an antipsychotic like Risperdal can sometimes do the
trick. I don’t know your particular situation, but I hope this helps improve
your
quality of life soon :-) Next… there has been discussion on good starting dosages… 10 is
recommended by Forest, but 5 makes sense as well, because it gives the body time
to
adjust to the side effects (usually headache, insomnia, sexual side effects
and/or dizziness). Someone had mentioned getting a prescription for Valium… a
benzodiazepine is a great temporary solution when beginning an SSRI because of
the long onset of action. Valium (diazepam) in particular is a good choice
because it has a long half-life, and as long as you don’t keep taking it, it’s
potential for addiction is less that others (i.e. Xanax). A request for 5mg
Valium
qd for maybe 2-3 weeks might be a good idea.
Wishing everyone the best,

Hated It!

Friday, October 15th, 2004

I got a prescription for Lex a couple of weeks ago for dep. anx.
It turned me into a basketcase. That drug is not for me. Now what do
I do with it. It was pretty expensive. I took it for a total of two
days and I don’t remember a thing. I think what I need is to talk my
MD into giving me Valium and I’ll just handle it from there…
