Myths Doctors have told us vs. the reality

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

My doctor told me that Celexa does not cause weight gain.
The reality: I gained over 50 lbs in 14 months on this drug. No matter what I
did to attempt to lose it it simply would not come off.
You can wean off this drug is just a few weeks.
The reality: It took me 6 months to come off of Celexa. When I’d been off it
completely about 6 months the weight simply started coming off. Then I was put
on Effexor XR.
These drugs don’t make you gain weight.
The reality: I’m back where I was when I was taking the Celexa. I was working a
job as a spinner in a cotton factory. I worked 12 hour shifts and average 9
miles of walking a night. Not slow walking but fast and alot of physical
activity besides the walking. After the first few weeks, for me, normally the
weight should have started melting off and fairly quickly at that. Did it? NO.
Sigh.

long term use

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

Hi all, I’ve been using Lexapro for one and a half years now and feel
great. Has anyone heard of side effects of long term use? I don’t
want to quit taking it as I’m afraid the depression will come back.

We may have to try something else then.I have not received any
emails, other than spam that went to my bulk folder.
I wanted to check the dates of emails I sent and my “sent” folder was
empty also.
I may have to create a new account.(last resort)
Thanks for responding and all the rest.

Genetic anxiety/depression

Monday, June 18th, 2007

“Generalized anxiety disorder is genetic, according to the National
Institute of Mental Health, and worsens when a person is exposed to
stress. The same may be true of anxiety and depression. Anxiety and
depression often begin in childhood and is much more common in women
than it is in men. Anxiety and depression may also be triggered by a
traumatic event, such as the death of a loved one or a divorce.”

lexapro/children

Monday, June 18th, 2007

My 8 yo daughter started taking lex in Dec. for her anxiety, and has
been working great .(low dose, 5mg. no side effects, and no anxiety!).
My son has had depression his whole little life (6 years), so after a
consult last week, we decided to give meds a shot. The doc put him on
lex at 5mg, although I cut it to 2.5mg. Within a couple of days, his
behavior was a bit manic, and he had a couple episodes of hitting
himself. He said he looked in the mirror and punched himself 20 times.
He also had a bloody lip, and he told me he punched himself in the mouth
at school after getting in trouble. He also had a very vivid dream of
me killing our 1 year old daughter with nails etc (!!!!) needless to
say, we have stopped lexapro completely. I understand this is not
approved for children, and Im very confused if I should have my daughter
wean from the meds, switch to something else, I just don’t know.
Anyways, thanks for “listening”. Im struggling with the meds, and just
wish there was a successful natural approach to all this!

Lexapro & Provigil — any experiences?

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

I saw my pdoc Monday and he asked how the Lex/Wellbutrin combo was
working for me. I told him that I wasn’t really happy with the
Wellbutrin…even though it takes care of the sleepiness from the
Lex, I feel way too ‘on edge’ all the time…my temper is back in
full force or more. He made a few suggestions, and I decided to try
Provigil. It’s very expensive and not covered by insurance for this
purpose, but if it works for me, then I am willing to pay.
He gave me a script for 7 days just to try it out — 200mg pills and
he said I could use 1/2 a pill once in the a.m. and see how it
works. Maybe it’s just me and my hopefulness, but I took my first
one yesterday and as I was driving to work, it was like a giant
lightbulb was switched on — everything was so clear and I was
awake, but not edgy or jittery. I would even say my thinking was
clearer and my spirit lifted a bit…I have been operating under this
brain fog for so long, I really had forgotten what it felt like
before the fog set in….So far today, the same results. I am so
hoping this works for me. The lexapro was really doing great things
for the depression, but the tiredness and fatigue was kind of
counteracting all of that and making me feel like a lazy slug. I’ll
keep you posted, but so far so good, and I slept fine last night, so
we’ll see….
Has anyone else used this combo — what have been your experiences?
Thanks!

Goodbye

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

Well I started the Lex at the dose my doc recommended — 2.5 mg in the
mid-a.m., and I had a horrible, horrible experience.
I was so sick I couldn’t sit or stand for more than 15 minutes.
I had throbbing headache, nausea, dizziness, sweating, lethargy,
constant hunger, diarrhea, jittery inside and emotional flatness &
numbness. My husband said I was totally spacey and I couldn’t follow a
train of thought. Nasty, nasty stuff.
Anyway the doc took me off immediately and we’re back to the drawing
board. Good luck to all of you.
